China leads the green energy transition

China is adding renewable energy capacity at roughly the same rate as the rest of the world combined. China installed three times as much wind and solar power as the United States in 2020, and is on track to set a record this year. China is seen as a world leader in expanding its green energy sector. The Asian giant is expanding its renewable energy sector with “Ten actions to achieve Carbon Peak in planned steps.”

Now China is doing much better than expected. Mike Hemsley, deputy director of the International Energy Transition Commission, said: “China is building renewable energy at such an astonishing rate that it is said to be outperforming the targets they have set for themselves.” In fact, China’s goal of achieving a total installed capacity of 1.2 billion kilowatts of wind and solar power by 2030 is likely to be achieved in 2025.

The rapid expansion of China’s renewable energy sector is largely due to strong government policies, which have created a diversified energy network with a range of green alternative energy sources and innovative technologies. At a time when many governments are just beginning to think about the need to tackle climate change, China is well on its way to becoming a renewable energy powerhouse.

For more than a decade, seeing the potential to become a leader in renewable energy, the Chinese government began funding the development of solar and wind power. This will also help China reduce the increasing air pollution in some of its major cities. During this period, China has supported private enterprises in financing green energy and provided credits and subsidies to encourage industrial operators to use green alternatives.

Driven by strong government policies, financial support for private investment, and ambitious targets, China is maintaining its title as the world leader in renewable energy. If the rest of the world’s governments want to meet their climate goals and reduce the effects of climate change, this is certainly the model they should follow.
